2019/20 11+ Course

  • 24/7 access to DOZENS of Sir Tailor's TEACHING VIDEOS for pupils and parents! Many pupils and parents have commented on how useful this UNIQUE FEATURE of the course has been for LEARNING and REVISION.  You cannot obtain this anywhere else.
  • 24/7 access to your child’s PERFORMANCE RECORDS
  • 24/7 access to FEEDBACK and GUIDANCE about your child.
  • SMALL GROUP teaching (normally up to just 9 pupils) so that we can teach children to apply CONCEPTS and REASONING that last a LIFETIME.
  • LOCAL VENUES convenient for you.
  • Tutor-marked HOMEWORK.
  • All RESOURCES(books, worksheets, etc.) are provided.
  • We back up our claims and belief in the Sir Tailor 11+ Course with a MONEY-BACK GUARANTEE.  See Term 2 of the T&Cs.  Nobody else (that we know of) does this - why is that?

We also separately offer (not as part of the 11+ Course)

  • FREE TESTS for children in year 3 and year 4.
  • MOCK 11+ TESTS suitable for CEMGL and Tiffin type tests.

Company Philosophy

Vision: to empower people by enhancing their love of and skills in learning and reasoning.

We strive to teach, guide and support children in such a way that they will want to continue to themselves push the boundaries of their learning and reasoning.

11+ Subjects

The course covers the following subjects.

  • English/Verbal Reasoning This includes English relevant to verbal reasoning for the Slough and Buckinghamshire 11+ tests. Creative writing is not included in this course but is catered for separately.
  • Maths This is relevant to numerical reasoning relevant to all grammar school 11+ tests.
  • Non-verbal reasoning This is relevant to non-verbal reasoning for the CEM and GL 11+ tests, especially as used by Slough and Buckinghamshire grammar schools.

Small Group Format

  • A Learning Coach (LC) facilitates a lesson with a small group of children, usually with support from a classroom assistant. The normal group limit is 9 children.
  • Our small group teaching process optimizes pupil interaction and makes good use of the small group dynamic whereby the children benefit not only from the LC’s input but also from the input and errors of other pupils.  This is not possible in larger groups.

Lesson Structure

Lesson structure varies but most lessons include the following elements.

  • Troubleshooting – an opportunity for children to have individual difficulties addressed.
  • Timed practice – timed tests aimed primarily at getting children accustomed to thinking clearly under time pressure.
  • 3 or 4 teaching units - from a mix of subjects from amongst English/VR, maths and non-verbal reasoning.
  • A short break

Course Structure

The subject matter of the subjects is taught during the first two thirds of the course. The remainder of the course focuses on consolidation, training in performing under pressure, and mock tests in the latter part. The last few sessions include mock 11+ tests.

Attendance Schedule

Children attend one lesson weekly, normally only during term-time (Slough term dates apply). The lesson is 3¼ hours long. Regular work (traditional and online) must be done at home. Work at home will typically amount to between 6 and 9 hours per week during term time, and less during most school holidays. 35 lessons are currently planned.

N.B. Lessons are scheduled during the latter part of the summer holiday 2020 because most 11+ tests now take place soon after the summer holidays. Keep this in mind when planning for these holidays.

Teaching Videos

Children and parents have unlimited access to numerous teaching videos.  The video lessons are a very powerful tool for learning that children and parents can review in their own time and can use to learn at their own pace.

Other Resources

We issue kits that include folders, a dictionary, a thesaurus, a vocabulary book, a novel, some practice materials, a pencil, and a highlighter pen. During the course we issue numerous worksheets (produced by us) and publications (published practice materials), and plastic cubes for 3D NVR The list of publication we issue is not fixed.

A wide range of homework is set during approximately the first two thirds of the course. This can include vocabulary work, completing varied exercises, homework sheets on units taught (Study Tests), work from publications issued, and studying teaching videos. Study Tests must be submitted to the LC for marking. Other work must be marked and corrected at home.
Homework in approximately the last third is largely set from some of the numerous publications that we issue as part of the course.

Parents and Pupil's Login

  • All parents and all pupils are issued a login to the S’ir Tailor website that allows them access to various resources at any time.
  • Pupils can view and re-view teaching videos, which is a powerful learning and revision resource. The can also see their scores and feedback.
  • Parents can access their child’s online scores and feedback via their login. Parents also have access to letters, answers and some information videos.
